Dr. Margaret Rouse Akin


Dr. Margaret Akin was born in Boone, Iowa in 1913.  She was educated at public schools in Iowa City and then went to the University of Iowa to get her medical degree in 1936.    Rouse married Austin Akin while in medical school.  In 1936, the couple moved to Shreveport where Dr. Akin interned at Tri-State Hospital and Austin went into business.

Dr. Akin began her practice as an OB/GYN doctor in 1938.  She was one of the first female physicians in Shreveport and would practice in the Shreveport Bossier area until her retirement.  She would be active in the community being president of the League of Women Voters as well as active in the Altrusa Club. 

Dr. Akin passed away in 1972 in Shreveport.  She was 60 years old.   The Margaret Rouse Akin Award for Obstetrics and Gynecology was established at the University of Iowa’s Medical School.
