This cast iron newel post is one of the few remains of Tri-State Sanitarium. Over the years as the hospital changed and expanded, little was saved. The much of the core of the actual 1924 construction, however, exists behind the walls of the current Willis-Knighton Medical Center.
Cast iron was a common building material in the early 20th century. One main reason was it was fire proof. This was especially important in structures like hospital and schools.
