Tri-State Sanitarium Transom and Iron railing

Description

The Tri-State Sanitarium like many buildings at the time lacked modern air conditioning.  Keeping both offices, operating and hospital rooms well-ventilated and the patients as comfortable as possible was an important part of the healing process.  Transoms windows were an important part of that process.

Located above the door, it allowed air to circulate while safeguarding the patients privacy.  The pale green or blue paint on this transom window is believed to be original.  These colors were was often used in a hospital as they were thought be soothing.

The iron railing can be seen in some photos taken in the years.  It was primarily decorative.
